The Natural Look Approach

A child or an adult with ears that stick out can be tortured without mercy. It can affect them greatly. When significant we recommend correction at an early age. Usually the ears are mostly developed by the age of 4-5 years old. Sometimes a child will "grow" into them, but those are only mild cases.

To correct the deformity, a short operation of about 90 minutes will correct the problem. It is usually performed under general anesthesia in the child and under sedation anesthesia in the adult. An incision is made behind the ear so it does not show, and the skin is carefully freed up from the underlying cartilage. The cartilage is then shaped with sutures to a more natural look. The incision is closed with sutures which absorb. The head is wrapped for a few days, and then the dressing is removed and showering is permitted. Discomfort is not severe, but the head wrap can be bothersome. There will be some bruising and swelling for about a week, and then the result will be visible. It will take a few months for all the swelling to resolve.

A sports headband is usually worn at night for a few weeks, while healing occurs. Sports activity can be resumed fairly quickly. With newer techniques, recurrence is not common. Complications are minimal. Significant changes and confidence in one's appearance occur.
