Sebum Induced Inflammation

SKIN INFLAMMATION: A COMMON PROBLEM

Dryness, sensitivity, itching, burning, skin discoloration, and dullness can be an indication of inflammation.

POSSIBLE CAUSES OF INFLAMMATION

Sun, hot water, environmental irritants (pollution, wind, smoke), cosmetics, caffeine, and alcohol can all contribute to inflammation. Using products such as moisturizers or topical cortisone preparations may make the condition worse.

MEDICAL TREATMENT MAY OR MAY NOT BE REQUIRED

Examples of inflammation include rosacea, dermatitis, acne, or infection; all of which require medical treatment.
If you are only experiencing dryness and mild sensitivity, Dr. Obagi recommends the ZO ® Skin Health system to strengthen and rejuvenate the skin.

DELAY OF TREATMENT MAY RESULT IN SKIN DAMAGE

Skin disease requires medical consultation and proper treatment from a qualified health care professional or dermatologist. Delay of treatment may result in skin damage. If you have any skin care concerns, or if you have used over-the-counter products for more than one month to treat a condition and have seen no improvement, Dr. Obagi recommends you seek proper medical care.

Rosacea

The specific cause of rosacea is unknown, but hormonal and genetic factors are believed to play a role. In his experience, Dr. Obagi has found that a major contributing aspect to rosacea is overactive oil glands. Increased sebum produced by these glands irritates the skin and causes inflammation and sensitivity.

ROSACEA PRESENTS ITSELF IN MANY FORMS

Redness, involuntary flushing or blushing, red capillaries over the cheeks and nose, rough texture due to large oil glands, large pores, oily skin, discoloration, acne-like cysts and nodules, and dry flaky skin are all signs you may have dermatological rosacea. Ocular rosacea often occurs simultaneously in the eyes and can affects lashes and eyelids, as well. If you are experiencing only dryness or sensitivity and have no other medical conditions, such as dermatitis, acne, or infection, Dr. Obagi recommends his ZO ® Skin Health system to strengthen and rejuvenate the skin.

DELAY OF TREATMENT MAY RESULT IN SKIN DAMAGE

Skin disease requires medical consultation and proper treatment from a qualified health care professional or dermatologist. Delay of treatment may result in skin damage. If you have any skin care concerns or have used over-the-counter products for more than one month to treat a condition and have seen no improvement, Dr. Obagi recommends that you seek medical care.

THE IDEAL SKIN HEALTH PROGRAM FOR ROSACEA

The manner in which Dr. Obagi treats rosacea depends on the appearance of the skin and the stage of rosacea.
For milder cases of rosacea, in which there may only be mild inflammation and no acne-type lesions, Dr. Zein Obagi recommends a daily skin care regimen of ZO ® Skin Health individualized products to soothe, calm, and repair the skin.
For patients with moderate to severe cases, Dr. Zein Obagi prefers using a combination of in-clinic therapeutic treatments and at-home use of specially designed, anti-redness products from his ZO ® Skin Health line.
Although rosacea cannot be cured, you can still have beautiful skin with the correct combination of therapies, controlled-depth peels, and retinol products available at the Obagi Skin Health Institute. Our staff specialists provide the caring, calming treatments your sensitive skin requires.

Acne Treatments by Zein Obagi, M.D.

PROMOTING CLEAR, HEALTHY SKIN

Acne affects individuals of all ages. It can be caused in part by hormonal fluctuations, stress, diet, medications, genetics, cosmetics, or environmental irritants. Most cases of acne are mild to moderate and can be treated by following the most effective, innovative formulation and simple, daily steps. It can usually be cleared within 3-5 months, as with the majority of our treatment protocols. The objective is to restore skin health while treating the main problem.

OBAGI SKIN HEALTH INSTITUTE’S BEVERLY HILLS ACNE TREATMENT

Clearing breakouts begins with addressing the underlying factors that cause or contribute to acne. Dr. Zein Obagi’s newest ZO ® Medical therapeutic solutions include carefully developed topical products and daily skin care regimens; both of which are designed to clear the skin. In addition, the Institute’s medically-grade facials, like the Deep-Pore Cleansing and clarifying facials, the Blue Light LED Treatment, ZO ® Stimulation Peel™ and ZO ® 3-Step Peel™ will help to achieve significant improvements during your journey to Healthy Skin.

CLEARING ACNE FOR LONG-TERM EFFECTIVENESS

Instead of a “quick fix” topical cream to temporarily resolve a current outbreak, the Institute’s most successful treatments focus on cleansing the skin regularly with products meant to restore the natural balance of the skin.
This long-term approach allows your skin’s renewed equilibrium to maintain its own healthy, breakout-free appearance without simply treating the surface, like most over the counter products do.

PREVENTING ACNE BREAKOUTS

If you are searching for an expert acne dermatologist in Los Angeles, San Gabriel Valley or Orange County, or if you have heard the success stories about Dr. Zein Obagi’s Beverly Hills acne treatments, please call for a personal consultation. Our goal is to incorporate physician treatments with patient education in order to encourage lifestyle changes that significantly reduce outbreaks and promote clear, healthy skin.

DR. ZEIN OBAGI RECOMMENDS ZO ® , HIS NEWEST EFFECTIVE ACNE TREATMENT

At the Obagi Skin Health Institute, recommendations for acne skin care are based upon the severity of acne, the presence (or lack thereof) of skin discoloration, the age of patient, and the probability of Skin texture damage (scars). Dr. Zein Obagi has found that the most effective treatment for acne is a combination of therapeutic services and ZO ® Medical and ZO ® Skin Health products; both of which clean the pores, reduce surface bacteria, diminish scarring, and rejuvenate the skin.

DELAY OF TREATMENT MAY RESULT IN SKIN DAMAGE

Skin disease requires medical consultation and proper treatment from a qualified health care professional or dermatologist. If you have any skin care concerns, or if you have used over-the-counter products for more than one month to treat a condition and have seen no improvement, Dr. Zein Obagi recommends you seek medical care.
The Obagi Skin Health Institute provides customized programs for acne that fit the severity of your skin condition and your skin type.

Skin Pigmentation Problems

Not all skin pigmentation problems are the same. Some are superficial and can be treated with topical creams; others are deep and require certain procedures. Skin discoloration and spots are a major problem for many people and may be related to genetics, sun damage, or hormones. Genetic spots are often deep in the dermis and require procedures and topical treatment for removal. Examples of dermal pigmentation include Nevus of Ota, Nevus of Huri, and dermal melanosis. Dermal pigmentation is common in some ethnicities and rare in others.

EXAMPLES OF SKIN DISCOLORATION CAUSED BY THE SUN

Discoloration caused by the sun can appear as small round spots or large patches of discoloration, which are occasionally accompanied by broken veins in the affected area. Examples of discoloration from the sun include freckles and Lentigo solaris. Discoloration from the sun is usually seen on sun-exposed areas of skin, such as the face, arms, neck, chest, and legs.

MELASMA: SKIN DISCOLORATION CAUSED BY HORMONAL IMBALANCE

Hormonal pigmentation, called melasma, often occurs in women who possess a genetic predisposition to the condition. For some, melasma can be a progressive, long-term problem, and there is no cure. Though most melasma can be treated and pigmentation resolved, there is always the chance that some pigmentation may return.
Superficial melasma responds well to creams and disappears, but deep melasma might require a combination of controlled-depth peels and/or laser procedures.

FOR MAXIMUM EFFECTIVENESS, TREAT THE ENTIRE AFFECTED AREA

To treat melasma effectively, Dr. Zein Obagi recommends treatment over the entire affected area, not just the dark spots.
It is common to experience redness, dryness and peeling for the first six weeks after beginning the ZO ® system. Melasma often masks broken capillaries, so once the pigment is resolved, it is not uncommon to see capillaries where pigment was once seen. Visible capillaries easily disappear with one or more laser treatments.

CONDITIONS THAT MAKE MELASMA WORSE AND MORE DIFFICULT TO TREAT

Oily skin, rosacea, and acne can exacerbate melasma. When treating melasma, conditions like these must be addressed and treated simultaneously.

THE IDEAL PROTOCOL FOR TREATING MELASMA

In order to avoid unwanted complication, it is imperative to get proper skin conditioning before any procedure. Lasers and peels may make melasma worse and more difficult to treat if underlying skin health is not properly addressed prior to beginning treatment. Dr. Obagi uses ZO ® Medical therapeutic solutions and ZO ® Skin Health daily skincare products to properly stabilize and condition skin before beginning treatment.
Medical supervision with a specialized treatment program is recommended to effectively treat melasma. Over-the-counter products are generally not effective.

AVOID THESE MELASMA TRIGGERS

Hot water, steam rooms, and saunas are not good for the skin, especially when treating melasma. Sun protection is essential when treating melasma since UV exposure can cause abnormal pigmentation.

DELAY OF TREATMENT MAY RESULT IN SKIN DAMAGE

Melasma requires medical consultation and proper treatment from a qualified health care professional or dermatologist. Delay of treatment may result in skin damage. If you have any skin care concerns or have used over-the-counter products for more than one month to treat a condition and have seen no improvement, Dr. Obagi recommends you seek medical care. At Obagi Skin Health Institute, skin health experts are highly trained in treating melasma.

Aging

CLINICALLY PROVEN ANTI-AGING TREATMENTS FOR SKIN OF ANY AGE

Signs of premature skin aging include wrinkles, skin laxity, sagging, skin discoloration, sensitivity, dryness, roughness, or volume loss. All of these signs of aging can be reversed with proper skin rejuvenation programs that keep your skin youthful. Early skin aging can be managed through our new aging preventing programs.

SIGNS OF AGING WILL WORSEN OVER TIME

Early intervention is the most effective approach to treating signs of aging. Dr. Zein Obagi has found that premature aging of the skin can be prevented with the use of his newest ZO ® Skin Health products, based on the latest skincare technology and bioengineered ingredients.

For advanced signs of aging, skin care products alone might not be sufficient. Chemical peels, laser procedures, or surgery are sometimes needed. A skin consultation with our skin care experts would determine the most effective treatment for your skin aging based on your skin type and needs.

RETINOL CAN REVERSE AND EVEN PREVENT THE SIGNS OF AGING

Retinol is the most powerful agent to fight the signs of aging. Under the guidance of Dr. Zein Obagi, ZO Skin Health, Inc. has developed two unique retinol delivery systems that maximize the penetration of retinoic acid to reduce the signs of aging. These formulations and delivery systems provide higher concentrations of retinol with unsurpassed performance.
Dr. Zein Obagi has found that ZO ® Retinol stimulates cell function for healthier skin with visible results.

MANY ANTI-AGING PRODUCTS ARE SIMPLY NOT EFFECTIVE

Most anti-aging products available to consumers contain a variety of active ingredients but in minimal amounts, which makes them useless. Moreover, they are not designed to work at the cellular level, a level at which they must reach in order to achieve the desired results. In order for any product to work effectively, the skin cells must be active and properly functioning, which is why Dr. Zein Obagi utilizes retinol as the most important anti-aging element in its proper formulation and concentration.

DR. ZEIN OBAGI USES ZO ® SKIN HEALTH, THE MOST POTENT ANTI-AGING SKIN CARE AVAILABLE WITHOUT A PRESCRIPTION

Dr. Zein Obagi utilizes the most powerful form of retinol available to activate the skin cells and reduce the signs of aging. In his advanced ZO ® Skin Health system, this full-strength retinol formula is combined with peptides, Co-Q10, growth factors, lipoic acid, Vitamin C, and idebenone.

Sun Damaged Skin

Damage to the skin from sun exposure can vary from mild to severe with delayed symptoms sometimes not appearing until years after chronic sun exposure.

SYMPTOMS OF SUN DAMAGE RANGE FROM MILD TO SEVERE

Symptoms of mild sun damage include discoloration, dullness, rough texture, and dryness. In his practice, Dr. Obagi uses ZO ® Skin Health programs to improve mild sun damage by renewing the skin surface and repairing damaged DNA.
Symptoms of severe sun damage include similar symptoms as mild sun damage but may also include wrinkles and the appearance of red scaly lesions that do not heal (i.e. actinic keratosis and different types of skin cancers).
Severe sun damage requires a medical evaluation in order to check for potential skin cancer and to treat all pre-cancerous lesions. Dr. Zein Obagi uses ZO ® Skin Health systems in his practice to repair damaged DNA and renew the skin before, during, and after all treatments for sun damage.

SOLAR ELASTOSIS

A condition known as solar elastosis also results from chronic sun exposure and alters tissue elasticity. Solar elastosis causes deep furrows, deep lines, and a yellowish skin tone. Treatment of solar elastosis requires laser treatments or professionally-administered chemical resurfacing.

SYMPTOMS OF SUN DAMAGE RANGE FROM MILD TO SEVERE

Facial treatments from highly trained Institute aestheticians can be used to treat mild sun damage without causing any irritation or inflammation. Dr. Obagi uses physician-only ZO ® Medical system components to treat sun damage by exfoliating away damaged skin layers, repairing damaged DNA at the cellular level, and renewing healthy skin cells. Other modalities, such as laser treatments or chemical peels, can be effective for treating severe sun damage.

PROTECTION FROM THE SUN IS CRITICAL

Using sunscreen is recommended every day of the year regardless of the duration of sun exposure. Sun damage can lead to skin cancer, which is why it requires medical consultation and proper treatment from the qualified professionals at the Obagi Skin Health Institute.

PLEASE DO NOT OVERLOOK SUN DAMAGE

Delay of treatment may result in severe skin damage and skin cancer. If you have a history of long-term sun exposure, have lesions that appear suspicious or do not heal, or have used any over-the-counter product for more than one month to treat a lesion and have seen no improvement, Dr. Zein Obagi recommends you seek medical care.

Skin Sensitivity (Innate or Acquired)

Indicative of skin having an impaired barrier function. This skin problem is unsuitable for any procedure since it requires proper conditioning in order to eliminate all sensitivity, restore proper hydration, and activate the skin's ability to renew itself. Persistent skin sensitivity can be treated by gradually building skin tolerance and improving the skin's barrier function through a two to three month program of stimulation.

Recently, a new cause has emerged for dry and sensitive skin: the use of moisturizers. Excessive moisturizing of the skin surface slows down the rate of natural exfoliation, which alters the water, lipid, and protein balance and weakens the skin’s barrier function.

BRINGING SKIN TO LIFE
